The Nila and Stokley Bailey PFLAG Scholarship Endowment Fund was created in March 1995 with a gift from the late Harold A. Morris of Charlotte in memory of his late foster son, Gary, who died of AIDS-related complications in 1991.
The scholarship seeks to recognize outstanding students who are members of the LGBTQ+ community, or who actively work within the community, and to encourage continuing education in order to foster a positive image of gay and lesbian people in society.
- The award amount per student may range from $500 to $1,000.
- Scholarships can be used to support books and/or tuition.
This scholarship is a one-time award per academic year.
Criteria for Eligibility
The scholarship provides need-based funds for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender undergraduate students or students with interest and investment in the lives and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community.
The applicant must:
- Be a full-time undergraduate UNC Charlotte student in good academic standing, demostrating excellent academic achievement
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid
- Be identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or have expressed interest and investment in the LGTBQ+ community
- Have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
About Nila and Stokley Baile
Nila and Stokley are the parents of a lesbian daughter and have served as “Mom and Dad” for hundreds of gays and lesbians in the Charlotte area for many years. Until the death of Nila Bailey in March 1998, the Baileys have been consistent participants in events within the gay and lesbian community. This scholarship serves as a testament to the love and admiration many members of the Charlotte gay and lesbian community feel for this remarkable couple.
About PFLAG:
PFLAG, an acronym for Parents, Family, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, is a national organization which provides advocacy, support and services to the parents, families, and loved ones of the gay and lesbian community.
How to Apply:
Submit a two-page essay, including brief biographical information, noting your involvements and detailing your interest in the scholarship (i.e., why you would be a good recipient of the scholarship, how receiving this scholarship will benefit you). A title page should also be included.
